CLUB NEWS: Quarter 4 - 2009 17th December, 2009 - The Christmas Message was delivered to us this year by the Rev. Jim Stewart from Letham St. Marks Church. The Reverend Jim's thought provoking message, questioned how the Health and Safety Executive would have interpreted the legislation regarding the birth of Jesus today? Jim also gave us a number of light-hearted, humorous anecdotes that have amused him on the meaning of Christmas in the past. His message was clear throughout, that Christmas was a time to reflect and revalue the great Christmas story.
5th December, 2009 - Rotary Club of Perth members enthusiastically participated in planting a Tree at Fairfield School, as part of the BBC's invitation to Radio Times readers to plant a tree on 5th December between 11am and noon. The BBC wished to break the record for planting the most trees in multiple locations in 1 hour, for entry into the Guinness Book of Records.Tree O'Clock didn't break the record for planting the most trees in a single hour in multiple locations, but we do know for definite that over 230,000 trees were planted during the all-important hour. So while not a new Guinness World Record, still an incredible achievement and an important legacy.


5th December,2009 - Silent Auction Day President Bill was pleased to announce that we had broken all records this year! The number of LOTs on offer was a brilliant 295. We also know that people BiD in record numbers, a truly remarkable effort in those difficult times, but to cap it all, we can now reveal our Final Total, which was an incredible
£22,600.00. Our Blue Ribbon Event has certainly gone up another gear this year, with the ongoing support of the Perthshire Advertiser, the goodwill of businesses and the publics support; it has now turned into a major community project. President Bill would like to thank everybody who got involved, for their never ending generosity, kindness and support, in making this once again such a huge success.

26th November, 2009 - Philip Hudson gave a very enlightening and enthusiastic talk on his passion for hill climbing, mountaineering and the great outdoors. His obsession to climb all the Munro's, at present he has achieved about half of them, which has taken over 5 years but he will not be happy until he has climbed them all. A Munro is a Scottish mountain with a height over 3,000 ft (914.4 m). They are named after Sir Hugh Munro (1856–1919), who produced the first compilation of a catalogue of such hills, known as Munro's Tables, in 1891. A Munro top is a summit over 3000 ft which is not regarded as a separate mountain.
12th November, 2009 Duncan White from UHI Perth College gave a very comprehensive talk on preparing an Estate for University Status. The redevelopment of the Perth College Campus in preparation for their soon to be granted University status is a very exciting time for the College. The plans include new student accommodation blocks, a new frontage and entry access, visionary new lecture facilities with many innovative features, in fact it is more than an upgrade it is a complete makeover for Scotland’s newest University.
22nd October, 2009 - Members of the Rotary Club of Perth met the Rotary Club of Crieff in the last of the round robin games in this year's Gavel Challenge Competition. Perth hosted the evening event at the West End Bowling Club and won their way through to the next round of this regional competition, in what turned out to be a very good night of fellowship an fun.

22nd October, 2009 - New member Susan Weir gave a most humours and fun job talk on her very varied career, advising the club that she had had a successful promotional and modelling career in her younger days. Susan has had an interesting mix of jobs from art gallery assistant to her present occupation at St.Johnstone FC as the Clubs marketing manager. After studying Business management at College in Glasgow Susan went on to work in a number of Hotels and other leisure organisations. Susan was approached by Saint's legendary chairman Geoff Brown who used his charm to successfully encourage Susan to take up her current position at McDairmid Park.
16th October, 2009 - The Perth Silent Auction appeal was launched today with an excellent full page article being put together by Alison Lowson, editor of the Perthshire Advertiser, based on the Lord Kitchener advert used so successfully during the Great War.
15th October, 2009 - Members were privileged to hear Hannah Holmes and Mhairi MacSween, both 6th year pupils at Perth High School, give an account of their experiences at Camp RYLA. Using the DVD of the camp to good effect they gave a fascinating account of the many activities they had been involved in. This was a most polished performance which held the audience enthralled. It was one of the best talks delivered to the Club in a long time and stands as a fine example of how talks should be delivered. The two ladies are to be congratulated on their performance especially as they gave up time during their autumn holiday to deliver it. Rotarians pictured with Hannah and Mhairi are President Bill, Willie and Victoria Barclay.
Willie followed this up by informing the Deputy School Head, just how well the two girls had performed their talk.

10th October, 2009 - Some of the Club members enjoying a day out at Dobbies Garden Centre, during a photo shoot for a forthcoming "Day in the Life of Rotary" article. They are seen showing off our fund raising Wishing Well permanently sited at Dobbies for the Rotarian Magazine.
1st October, 2009 - A University of Perth the topic of a talk given by our very own History teacher Alan Calderwood. Alan as you would expect gave his usual polished performance on a subject that he had written his thesis whilst at University, on how Perth had very nearly fallen heir to its own University, the most prestigious University of St Andrews, and the very first Scottish University.
