  CLUB NEWS: Quarter 3 - 2009

Club News as it happens

24th September, 2009 - Teams from the Rotary Clubs of Pitlochry and Perth took part in the Gavel Challenge competition.  Perth hosted this evening event at the West End Bowling Club, and won their way through to the next round of this regional competition, in what turned out to be a very close competition.

  • Team Captain - David Lindsay thanked Pitlochry for their fellowship and good sportsmanship.

10th September, 2009 - Dr Alison Morrison, Consultant at the newly built Cornhill Macmillan Palliative Care Unit at the PRI, gave us a very informative insight in to this very exciting new development in Perth. It includes facilities and accommodation for family and friends of the patients to spend precious quality time with each other, and help make their time in care as comfortable and enjoyable as it can be, during this very difficult time. Dr Morrison showed us pictures that she had taken and apologised for their quality, but they did more than enough to convince everyone that our fund raising effort for the MacMillan Palliative Care unit was all worth while. Once it is fully furnished and operational we hoe to arrange a Club visit.

  • David Lindsay wished Dr Morrison and her team all the very best, for this superb and much needed facility.

27th August 2009 - 8 finely honed athletes from the Rotary Club of Perth headed off to Glenrothes for the first round of the Gavel Challenge. In true Olympian fashion, they had been training for minutes and were mentally and physically well prepared for the challenge. The games consisted of teams of two challenging a Glenrothes pair in a series of four events. These events were the throwing the hammer (modified in that it was throwing tennis balls into a basket), discus (connect 4), balance beam (Jenga) and target shooting (putting). The competition was intense, but, Perth held their nerve and romped home to take Gold by 19 points to 11.
A very enjoyable evening was had by all and our thanks to Glenrothes for being such fine hosts.

27th August, 2009 - Current World Curling Champion, Peter Smith gave a very amusing and interesting insight into the training that the modern athletes have to go through, to attain the very highest standards to compete at the very highest level of sport, any sport. Not only the physical training but also the mental and psychological training required when preparing for a major Championships, such as the forthcoming Olympic Games in which he hopes to compete. Peter also gave us some very humorous moments with little anecdotes’ on the off rink psychology that can play tricks with opponents minds.
  • David Beveridge wished Peter well and hoped that Perth can have its own Olympic Champion.

1st August, 2009 - Annual Cricket Match at Doo'cot Park between Perth Rotary Club and the Kinnoull Rotary Club. Full report to follow.

16th July, 2009 - The club members had a great afternoon out with a guided tour of the Black Watch Museum at Balhousie Castle The origins of Balhousie Castle are said to date back to the 12th century. Originally an L-shaped tower house what we see today is the central part, possibly dating from the 17th century. In its present form, the Castle dates from the 1860s. During the Second World War, the property was used by the Auxiliary Training Service as Officers Quarters. After the War, it housed a detachment of the Royal Army Service Corps and the Headquarters, Highland District, Corps of Royal Engineers. In the early 1960s there was a major Army re-organisation. The Black Watch Depot at the Queen's Barracks was closed and Regimental Headquarters and the museum came to the castle where they remain to this day.
  • Willie Coupar proposed the vote of thanks.
