  CLUB NEWS: Quarter 3 - 2007

27th September 2007 - Mrs Kate Donegan - Governor at H.M.Prison in Perth gave a colourful, light hearted, yet very informative talk on prison life, from the other side of the bars! The builders have been in and the old 'C' Hall was demolished and replaced with a brand new building, no more medieval slopping out at Perth, cells with toilets no less. The prison inmates were given the opportunity to name the the new building, being the people who used it most! After much consideration they came up with this little gem, they wanted it called 'C' Hall, "nothing really changes", does it, O'h yes the toilets. Being Perth Prison's, First Lady Governor caused quite a stir, one well know Red Top tabloid even printed a very provocative picture of Mrs Donegan's head, super-imposed on a scantily clad model's body! The prisoners comments are best kept within the prison walls and with the members of the Rotary Club of Perth!
  • David Robb proposed the vote of thanks.

20th September 2007 - The Club received the NEWS that the whole of PERTH had been waiting for from SOS Children's Villages, the new Community Centre and the new Nursery School in Kyankerni - Indonesia were now open. The Kyankerni project brought the whole of Perth together in an unprecedented way, to raise funds for this specific project. After the terrible events of the Boxing Day - Tsunami 2004, the three Perth Rotary Clubs joined forces for the first time in a effort to make a real difference, a three club committee was set up, and decided that they wanted to make a permanent diference. They contacted SOS Children Villages the first organisation to reach most of those affected, and they advise that a small village called Kyankerni in Indonesia had been all but wiped out, they had nothing! It was agreed that the three clubs would raise cash to help build a Community Centre, which is a School by day, Community Factory by night, with sewing machines for the widows, and a Medical and Social Centre at the weekends, a nursery for the orphaned children was also opened. Today that dream is a wonderful reality, well done Rotary, well done the people of Perth, raising £30,000. This is a project of which the citizens of  Perth can be justifibly proud, and gives the people of Kyankerni hope and a foundation for the future.

20th September 2007 - David Syme a teacher, army officer, linguist, marathon runner and fisher, gave us a most interesting talk about taking schoolchildren abroad. He began with school trips in the 60s when travel abroad was a new venture for most youngsters and when sightseeing was the main aspect. He then moved on to the more ambitious area of World Challenge where schools take groups to developing parts of the world and experience a much more primitive lifestyle than they have been accustomed to - here, having been a leader on such ventures, he spoke with conviction. His third theme was to develop language skills in a much more practical way than is customarily the case, by working with projects for youngsters in overseas locations - as he is a fluent Mandarin speaker, China featured strongly here.

  • Willie Coupar proposed the vote of thanks in his usual inimitable manner!

8th September 2007 - The Rotary Club of Perth Charity Fayre was a great success, taking in over £4300.00 for local, national and international charities. The decision to invite other Charities to participate has also proved a resounding success, though we do not have their official figures it has been estimated that they raised between them, about the same ammount £4000.00! What a great day.
The President takes this oportunity to thank the People of Perth for their Wonderful support.

2nd September 2007 - A happy group of members and guests from Rotary Club of Perth set off from Perth on Sunday morning, for a five day coach tour to Ireland.

30th August 2007 - The Rotary Club of Perth with 50 points were again victorious in the annual Three Clubs Competition for the Presidents Putter played over the 'Wee Course' at Rosemount Golf Club - Blairgowrie. Eighteen players took part, each of the three Perth clubs put in a team of six players and the best three scores from each team counted for the final result. Runners-up, Perth St. Johns, had 39 points while Perth Kinnoull were close behind with 38 points. The outstanding score of the evening was returned by Alison Milne with 20 Stableford points from 39 strokes over the 9-hole course. With the Trophy - Ron Clark and Alison Milne.

27th August 2007 - Club President David Anderson welcomes Provost John Hulbert, who took over as Provost of Perth earlier this year as a new Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Perth.
Provost John donated a bottle of Perth's own label whisky for the bottle stall at the forthcoming Rotaty Charity Fayre. Local people have an opportunity to win prizes and pick up bargains at the new Farmers Market Style - Charities Fayre taking place in High Street and King Edward Street, Perth on Saturday, 8th September.
A number of stands have been given to local charities to raise money for their own good causes.
    • David and the Charity Fayre Convenor Sandy Dow joined the Provost in toasting the success of the Fayre.

21st August 2007 - A group of 16 hikers enjoyed a leisurely evening stroll in our very own big tree country. The route took in some of Perthshire's finest scenery, starting from Dunkeld bridge and leading past the Cathedral and through the Hilton Hotel grounds and beyond to the rock pool, where some of our fishing members were tempted to join the anglers. The party adjourned to the Atholl Arms Hotel for a tasty supper followed by a challenging theme quiz on Big Trees, the river Tay and Beatrix Potter.
                  • Organised by David Robb

5th July 2007 - New member Alan Calderwood gave a very enlightening job talk on his life in Education. Starting his working life after University as a teacher, to his final position as Chief Education Officer for Middlesburgh. It is obvious from Alan's enthusiasm that he not only loved the career choices he made and the route he travelled from Scotland to England and back! Alan can be rightfully proud of the lasting legacies he left behind.
    • From Perth Academy to Perth Rotary in a life time! Nice to have you back Alan.
