17th June, 2010 - The Rotary Club of Perth's annual essay writing competition for the Neil McCorkindale Trophy, was won this year by Fran Brine of Perth Academy, she is surrounded by other entrants from the Academy, Perth High and Perth Grammar, all of whom produced work of a very high quality, they are Jasmin Watt and Kirsty Butt of Perth High; Sam Richardson, Hannah Walton and Caitlin Murray of Perth Grammar; Fran Brine and Catriona Lawson of Perth Academy. The trophy was presented by Rotary President Bill Duncan who is pictured here along with Willie Coupar who organised the competition. Fran's complete essay will be published on our website ASAP.

  • Convenor Willie Coupar thanked all the entrants and presented each of them with a Book Token.

10th June, 2010 -  Fiona Bartley-Jones, Tayside co-ordinator for the charity Action for Sick Children, told the Club of the origins of the Charity as an advocate for families whose children were hospitalised and whose emotional and practical needs the Hospital Authorities of the time were largely ignorant and substantially ignored.

Fiona concentrated most of her talk on an aspect of her work taking up a substantial amount of her time over the past while, namely teenage mothers in the Tayside area. Most of us were aware of the high level of teenage pregnancies in the Tayside area but were nevertheless shocked when Fiona described the age profile of these girls and that those under sixteen receive no direct state funding.

When she challenged Club Members to put forward reasons why these girls became pregnant Members came up with the normal responses of lack of education, peer pressure, lack of parental guidance and example, possibility of housing and more. Fiona shocked many of us when she explained the level of detachment from the Educational system  leading to a high level of illiteracy, making understanding even basic written instructions impossible in this group, the repeated generational patterns, but even more so the pressure from the boy friends for the girls to have babies as a mark of their virility. The chilling picture of a teenage boy with a Staffordshire bull terrier on a lead proudly wheeling a push chair with his baby in it is one that will remain with us for some time.

Fiona’s message was not totally bleak and her enthusiasm and optimism that her organisation’s carrot and stick approach was making some difference was the positive way with which she ended a very impressive talk. Action for Sick Children have produced a DVD fronted by Lorraine Kelly showing the way the Tayside region of the Organisation use these girls to mutually educate and support each other but due to technical difficulties we were unable to view the film, however Fiona more than made up for that with her excellent presentation.

  • Alistair McLean proposed a vote of thanks.

Monday 7th June, 2010 - The Final of the 2010 Rotary Club of Perth - Young Chef of The Year Competition, sponsored by Willie Deans of the Deans @ Let's Eat restaurant, was held at Perth High School. Young Chefs from Schools around Perthshire compete annually for this prestigious trophy, hoping to win a meal for two at Willie's top restaurant, work experience in his busy kitchen and a leading cookbook to take them on to the next level.

This year all the contestants were asked to use local ingredients to prepare a main course featuring salmon and a dessert using local berries. All of the contestants used imagination and great skill to produce mouth watering dishes that made Willies task in choosing a winner as difficult as usual. The Winner of the Best Main Course was Lynsey Wilson of Perth High School with Kirstie Allan of Perth Grammar School producing the Best Dessert. Lynsey was also awarded the Chef of the Year Prize for the best overall meal.
  • Our thanks as usual go to Willie Deans for his sponsorship and encouragement as well as for judging the Final itself.

Thursday 3rd June, 2010 - Ken Drummond was awarded this year's Jimmie Cairncross Award from President Bill for his lifetimes work with Letham Football Club. Ken was a founder member and is still running the club more than 40 years later, Letham FC have over 300 players with teams in all the age groups from 9 year of age. Letham were presented with the Community Club of the Year Award this year by the SFA, quite an accolade.

Thursday 20th May, 20010 - Nine Members from the Rotary Club of Perth travelled to Stonehaven for the Quarter Final Round of this years Gavel Challenge. The Team enjoyed the fine hospitality of the Stonehaven Rotary Club, the long drive was easily offset by a fine evening’s entertainment, with games of Dominos, Connect 4, Putting  and a fiendish game called Bogole.

Perth did win but not by a large margin, with the last event to play Perth led 16-14 and needed to win the final game to win the match, which they duly did to win 18-14 on the night. Every member of the team contributed to the victory, scoring 4, 4, 4 and 6. The evening was rounded off by a trip to the harbour for  a picture and a refreshing drink before heading home, pleased to be in the Semi-Finals.

Friday 20th April, 2010 - An intrepid band of Perth Rotarians did battle with the elements and Glenisla golf course in the first Rotary match of the year. Despite the constant rain, the course and most of the competitors were in great shape.  In a very close fought contest for the Malcolm Miller Trophy (best net score) 3 players had the same score so after a count back President Bill Duncan was declared the winner. The Simpson Medal for best scratch score was won, for the third year in succession, by David Anderson.

Thursday 8th April, 2010 - An 8 Member team from the Rotary Club of Perth played Rotary Club of Dundee in the long delayed round of this years Gavel Challenge competition. Perth hosted the evening event at the West End Bowling Club. Perth won this competitive but very friendly match 19 -13, Dundee never really recoverd from loosing all four first round games. We now also know after waiting with baited breath that we will meet Rotary Club of Stonehaven, away in the Quarter-Final round of this years competition, with the prize of a home tie in the next round should we win. We enjoyed a delightfull buffet provided by Wendy Lindsay and Meg Ritchie.
  • Alan Calderwood proposed a vote of thanks and Ian Mathers responded on behalf of the Dundee Club.

Friday 2nd April, 2010 - The Finals of the 20th Rotary World Curling Championships were held at Perth's Dewars Centre with our Club reaching the Final against the Rotary Club of Stettler, Alberta, Canada. Our team of Alay Milne, Russell McCabe, Hamish Milne and President Bill got off to a bad start, loosing a three at the first end from which they never fully recoverered and lost 8 - 4 after the 8 ends in a disappointing but very friendly and sporting game, the winners; Skip Neil Connor, third Rene Bernard, second Trevor Leinweber and lead Brian Sribney from Stettler, Alberta, Canada, are now the new Rotary Champions of the World for 2010. The winners of the Friendship Trophy which is run concurrently with the Championship event, were the Scottish Team from the Rotary Club of Ayr with the runners-up again from Canada, the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada.

  • Congratulations to Stettler and Ayr from President Bill and everybody in the Rotary Club of Perth.

Thursday 1st April, 2010 - A combined meeting of the three Perth Rotary Clubs; Perth, St.Johns and Kinnoull was held in a Marque at the Dewars Centre in Perth, with all the visiting Rotary World Curling Championship curlers and their partners plus District Governor Bill Macfarlane Smith and his wife Daphne in attendance. They were treated to both an enjoyable meal and two very interesting and entertaining speakers in Gordon Bannerman, Sports Reporter with the Perthshire Advertiser and David Hay, Coach to the Great Britain Men’s Curling Team, both in their own inimitable styles, provided an insight into the world of sport. It was an evening of real fun and fellowship, further enlightened by the antics of Joe McCulloch of the Rotary Club of Peterborough - Canada as be picked-the-pockets of all and sundry for very minor misdemeanours, this added greatly to the entertainment and raised a substantial sum of money for PolioPlus, a cause very dear to us all. District Governor Bill Macfarlane Smith (Rotary Club of Dundee) congratulated President Bill and all of the organising team on running a superb event stating that it had been impeccably planned and executed, and provided not only a superb week of sporting activity but a great opportunity to make new friendships and renew old ones! Bob Reid from Perth Kinnnoull thanked everybody for their efforts on an excellent evening.

  • President Bill proposed a vote of thanks, to the Curlers and everyone who contributed to what were wonderful Championships.
