  CLUB NEWS:  Quarter 1 - 2007

24th March 2007 - Bells Sports Centre hosted the second Young Carers Day. This year’s event comprised a Superstar Challenge in which teams of four completed a series of fitness challenges for the Superstar Trophy. 12 Teams participated in the challenge with Letham U17 Football Team emerging as the eventual winners, with Grassicks BMW runners up. Libby McArthur the star of BBC Televisions soap River City joined the event in the afternoon to present the Challenge Trophy.

In addition to the Superstar Trophy Challenge there were a range of activities for the young Carers to enjoy including a bucking bronco, inflatable slide, bouncy castle and various sports activities.

The event was supported by Reg Vardy (Vauxhall Dealers) who sponsored the attendance of the Radio Tay Road Show and transported Carers and their families to the event. Some 70 Carers and their families were amongst the public attending the event, in excess of £3000 has been raised to support the activities of Young Carers in Perth & Kinross. Graham Lackie, Manager,Perth & Kinross Leisure’s Rodney Fitness Centre organised and supervised the Fitness Challenge and Perth & Kinross Council supported the day by meeting the cost of the hire of Bells Sports Centre.

  • The Three Rotary Clubseach contributed £500 to the event, in addition, volunteers from the clubs assisted as timekeepers and provided assistance wherever it was needed.

22nd March 2007 - Sandy Wood, Regional Supervisor for the Youth Bowling Association, in the Dundee, Perth, and Aberdeen area gave a very upbeat talk on the success being enjoyed at the present time by his organisation - coaching the local youngsters bowls. The Perth youth teams seem to be having a particularly successful run with many new members and a very enthusiastic core membership, long may it continue. The Rotary Club of Perth sponsor the Youth Triples Competition on the South Inch in May.

  • Alay Milne proposed the vote of thanks and President Bill handed over a cheque

20th March 2007 - A number of members and friends enjoyed a light humoured walk through Perth’s dark past, with the mysterious cloaked John Larg on a guided tour, discovering the murky past of the not so Fair City of Perth. With tales of man traps, cannibalism theatre ghosts, witchcraft, clan feuds and murder, it was a bit scary to think it all happened in Perth. The evening finished with enjoyable supper in the Royal George, good food, good company and a few good stories; on a cold night, what more could you want! can you hear the drums

  • Very well organised by convenor David Robb

15th March 2007 - Gordon Bannerman the current Perth Lord Dean of Guild gave a humorous but very interesting insight into the formation, history, and workings of this ancient organisation. Perth Guildry was founded over 800-years ago and minutes still exist recording the workings of the Guild dating back to the 15th century. Gordon a journalist by profession, with the local Perthshire Advertiser newspaper, advised that the Guildry were the forerunners of local councils and very influential members of the local community. In fact being accepted as a member was a much sought after honour and a licence to print money, as they decided who got what business, who sold and did what in the Town and County! Today the Guildry is a charitable institution doing a great deal of good in the community, for which the people of Perth can be justifiably proud.
  • Hamish Milne proposed the vote of thanks

22nd February 2007 - Willie McMartin of the International Rescue Corps gave an excellent video presentation showing the stalwart work the Corp carries out throughout the world. They have operated at Earthquakes, the Tsunami, and Volcanic Eruptions and even played a major role with our own emergency services, when a chemical factory blew up in Glasgow in 2004. The International Rescue Corps is a voluntary operation, funded by Business and Public donations; they are a UK organisation and offer their services to any country in the world free of charge. • Ian McLean proposed the vote of thanks

Bob lives at Elgol on the south west coast of Skye and has been interested in birds for over 40 years, he now acts as a local representative for the British Trust for Ornithology and is an office bearer with the Scottish Raptor Study Groups.

13th February 2007 - Scottish Rotary Curling Championship - Perth Rotary Club's rink of Russell McCabe, Alay Milne, Hamish Milne and Alistair Ritchie narrowly lost the final of the Ram's Head Trophy on Tuesday 13th March. Fairfield was one of the most rundown and deprived communities in Scotland and through her and other member’s efforts, they have transformed the area into a community of which Perth and Scotland can be well proud.
  • Ewan Bannerman presented the Cairncross Quaich on behalf of the Club.

23rd January 2007 - A group of 17 of Perth's finest cue men gathered at the New Yorker Snooker Club to do battle on the green baize. More talk than chalk, this is a popular annual event, though it is probably fair to say, that the best skills were reserved for handling the forks and knives at the Manzil Indian Restaurant afterwards. The Presidents Pot, our new trophy for the highest break was won by Neil Rowlands, who achieved a massive 13 - the Crucible beckons!
  • Thanks to John McEwen for the organisation.

25th January 2007 - Ms Jane Spiers from the Horse Cross, gave the member a very enlightening talk and update on how the New Concert Hall is performing after it first year in operation, though there have been teething troubles, it appears to be a resounding success, and totally vindicates the Town Council's faith in the project from the outset. Jane pointed out that the whole of Perth was benefiting as 40% of the visitors it attracted were from out with Perthshire.

  • Bob McFarlane proposed the vote of thanks.

18th January 2007 - Ms Anne Bunting, Chairperson of the Perth Business Women’s Network gave the members an informative insight into how the organisation was formed, and the type of activities their members enjoy. Most enlightening was the technique they use to do a bit of people profiling - using colour cards to identify certain types of character's. Going by our member’s reaction the results must have been uncomfortably accurate!!!
  • John McEwen proposed the vote of thanks.

17th January 2007 - The club won the latest round of the Gavel Challenge, in a play off, against Mayfield Rotary Club, Dundee. Played in the famous clubhouse of Dundee FP Rugby Club After a gruelling 4 rounds, the teams were tied 16 - 16.

It was decided that the play-off should be 3-darts, with the player nearest the bull the winner, as hosts Dundee agreed to throw first, their man had 2 darts inside the 25 ring, brilliant. Next up to the Ockey, representing the Rotary Club of Perth was Robbie 'Jocky Wilson' Singer, to score a bulls-eye with his second dart, what a player, YaBa-DaBa-Doo.
