Membership Announcements & Proclamations


27th June, 2010 -  The club were saddened to hear of the death of a distinguished former member. Neil McCorkindale was a very successful and highly respected Rector of Perth Academy from 1970 to 1986. An Argyllshire man, his studies at Glasgow University were interrupted by war service, on his return he gained a 1st class honours degree in Mathematics. After starting his career teaching at Perth Academy, he was successively head of Maths at Nairn and Elgin before becoming Rector of Rothesay Academy. From there he went on to Ayr Academy, before his third and final Rectorship in Perth. He was deeply involved in community activities in Perth, notably Cancer Research, St Matthews Church and the High Constables. His active involvement in our club is commemorated by the Creative Writing awards in his name. His wife Jean died in 2006, Neil is survived by his daughters Jane and Fiona.

  • Members of the Club attended the Funeral Service in St Mathews Church and Committal Service at the Crematorium.

 


5th May 2010 - It was with much sadness that we that we have received the news of the death of Margaret, the wife of our former President and retired minister the Rev.Gordon G. Stewart. The Clubs heartfelt sympathy goes out to Gordon's family.

  •  Members of the Club attended the Funeral service. 

 

 


23rd May 2009 - It is with real sadness that we that we received the news of the sudden death of our former Club member, John Angus. The Club's deepest sympathy goes out to John's wife Rena and all their family and friends.

  • Members of the Club attended the Funeral service at Perth Crematorium.

 

 


10th May 2009 - It is with great sadness that we that we received the news of the sudden death of our former club member, the Rev. Stanley Carr. The Clubs heartfelt sympathy goes out to Stanley's wife, Margaret and all his family. Stanley died after a spirited battle with cancer, borne with his great faith and understanding, God bless him. Renowned for his extended lunch time graces, they and he are missed by all the Club members who had the pleasure to know him.

12th February 2009 - New Member Induction; Susan Weir - Corporate Sales Manager StJohnstone FC. Born 1969 in Glasgow, educated at Hutchison’s Grammar School, studied Hospitality at Glasgow College of Food Technology, went into sales with the Peugeot Motor Co. and also worked part time with a Glasgow based promotion/PR/modelling agency. She met husband Jim, former Saints Captain in 1991, they have three children, son Sam 16 and daughters, Lucy 14 and Sophie 10. Moved to Perth in 1995 when Jim came to play for St.Johnstone, 8 years ago she was persuaded to work at McDiarmid Park by Geoff Brown. Her brief was simple; bring in much needed cash, by way of advertising, sponsorship and corporate hospitality. Susan says the best thing about her job is the variation day to day and the chance to meet so many interesting people. Susan had a nine month period away form Saints 2005, to indulge her love of art and set up a Gallery in Dundee which has since been bought over by a prolific artist and doing very well. She missed the Club and they missed her, so she's back!

8th May 2008 - New Member Induction, Ewan McLeod - Tax Advisor with Johnston Carmichaeloriginally trained to be a dentist,he subsequently qualified as a Psychologist and on graduating found himself a job with the Civil Service in Glasgow. Slotted in to the Inland Revenue he rose up through the ranks until promotion was not available unless he moved to London. This was not an option financially with a young family and so he looked for alternatives. Speaking to a recruitment consultant firm he was put forward as a candidate to the largest independent Accountancy practice in the North East of Scotland and was subsequently appointed as head of Compliance tax with the firm in Elgin. He has been with that firm in one form or another since 1991. He qualified as a Chartered Tax Advisor in 1996 and is now the managing partner of the Perth office.

  • Euan was introduced to the Club by Ben Gunn and welcomed by President David Anderson.


10th January 2008 - New Member Induction: Derek Petterson was educated at Craigie Primary School and Perth High School and upon leaving school in 1991, joined the Army and served a total of seven years. During that time his main job was as a gunnery instructor for the Challenger Main Battle Tank. He had tours in Germany, Cyprus, America, Canada and Northern Island. 
Derek joined the family business, McLeod Glaziers, in 1997 working as a window manufacturer and installer then rising through various positions in the company until he took over as Managing Director in 2004, on his fathers retiral. He enjoys all sports but has a particular passion for National Hunt Horse Racing, he is joint owner of two horses, experiencing varied degrees of success.
  • Derek was introduced to the Club by Andy Ritchie and welcomed by President David Anderson. 


21st November 2007 - New Member Induction: Alison Lowson is the Editor of the Perthshire Advrtiser, Blairgowrie Advertiser and Strathearn Herald. Alison started her career with the Paisley Gazette as a reporter before moving to the Stirling Observer, her first editor's position was at the Rutherglen Reformer (winner of the Newspaper Society's Scottish Weekly Newspaper of the Year title), before she moved north to take over the reins at Perth in 2001. Being new to the town she is still finding her way round and is starting to make friends outside the office, she is enjoying getting settled into her new home in the village of Methven with her husband Stephen. Ski-ing, motorbiking, hillwalking and gardening take up, what little free spare time she has away from the editors desk.

    15th November 2007 - New Member Induction: Victoria Unite was born in Scone and is a former Perth Academy pupil. She later went on to gain a degree in Information Technology before heading off to London as data analyst and project manager with international news company Reuters. Wishing to return to Scotland, Vicki then joined global financial services firm JP Morgan Chase, only returning to Perth in August of last year as Business Manager at the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce. Vicki is really enjoying being back in the area and says the best perk of the job is that she gets to meet so many local business people and be so involved in the community. Vicki lives in Craigie with Nick and enjoys skiing, horse riding and walking the dogs.

    • Victoria was introduced to the Club by Alistair Dorward and welcomed by Vice President Bill Montgommery.


    15th November 2007 -  New Member Induction: Alistair Duffy moved back to Perth 20months ago from East Anglia after spending over 8 years with Coca Cola, where he worked in various positions. He is currently working with and helping to build the business at Edward Jones Investments as a 'Stockbroker and Financial Adviser in Perth, where the main focus is meeting with and advising people in the local community on how to achieve their financial goals. Alistair recently joined Perth Squash Club and more recently the Perth Leagues, he also enjoys a wee bit of running, weather permitting and at the age of just 33 years old, brings the average age of the club down substantially.

    • Alistair was introduced to the Club by Bob McFarlane and welcomed by Vice President Bill Montgommery.


    6th September 2007 - New Member Induction: Gordon Hay, Following 15 years in NHS biochemistry laboratories Gordon worked for a number of medical diagnostic companies in both the UK and the Republic of Ireland. In 1997 he took part in a Management Buy Out of the neonatal business unit from Shield Diagnostics in Dundee and set up Quantase in Perth. Quantase was acquired by the American multinational Bio-Rad Laboratories Inc.in April 2002. Gordon is currently the General Manager of the Scottish operation. Gordon lives in Kinrossie with his wife Jacqueline and son Alexander. Gordon’s main interests outside work are his family, rugby and golf, 'not necessarily in that order'.

    • Gordon was welcomed into the Club by President David, the Object of Rotary read by Secretary Robbie Singer. 


    23rd August 2007 - New Member Induction: George Thomson is a former member of the Club who was forced to resign due to pressure of work. He was a pupil of Perth Academy, then went on to to complete a degree in chemical engineering, before becoming a teacher at Perth Academy finishing as Deputy Rector. George continued to support the Club during his years of absence, helping out in many ways, he even provided the transport for the New Year golf outing! Married to Irina they now live in Forgandenny, golfer, walker and music lover, it's nice to have you back.

    • George was re-introdued to the Club by Ian McMillan and welcomed by President David Anderson.    


    9th August 2007 - New Member Induction: Fraser Brown, married to Sheila, was born in Arbroath and brought up in the Forfar, he joined the Black Watch aged just 16 years, he served for 7 years, seeing active duty in Germany and Northern Ireland. Having got soldiering out of his system, he studied at Stirling University, gaining degree's in History and English, followed by a PGCE at Jordanhill. A teaching career followed, mainly in the Forth Valley, where he specialised in Special Educational Needs, integrating vunerable children back into the mainstream, becoming the Assistant Rector at Wallace High in Stirling. A change of scene followed, when with the fall of Ceachescu in Romania, he helped train local teachers in English, undertaking similar work in Pakistan.

    • Fraser was introduced to the Club by  Willie Coupar and welcomed by President David Anderson.


    9th August 2007 - New Member Induction: Charles Evans, married to wife Annie, has 3 sons and 5 grandchildren, he joined the Rotary Club of Oban in 1991. Charles joined the Navy as a boy seaman, aged just 15 years, where he spent 12 happy years. Over the following 25 years, he was employed by BEA/BOAC/BA as a ground engineer, overseas engineer and laterly as a flight engineer, spending the last 5 years flying for Air Atlanta Icelandic, before retiring to Oban in 1999. He and Annie sailed the Caribbean for three years, before moving to Perth in March this year. Golf and Mountain climbing are now his favorite pursuits.

    • Charles was introduced to the Club by Bill Montgomery and welcomed by President David Anderson.


    28th July 2007 - New Member Induction: Sandy Pearson, married to wife Fiona with 3 grown up daughters, he worked as an IT consultant for many years with IBM, AT&T and many more international companies. This involved travel to Europe and the USA to work with corporate clients, but is now retired. He helps with the charity News Recordings for the Blind, his sports are curling and hacking his way round the golf course.

    5th July 2007 - New Member Induction: Joe Cairns, born in Greenock, is a qualified accountant who has worked for a number of major UK companies. Joe was Director of Finance at Inver House Distillers in Airdrie, where he met his wife Margaret, they have 2 daughters, Caroline who recently graduated from St Andrews University and Laura who is in her 3rd year at Glasgow University.
    In 1998 Joe joined McLelland Cheese run by the Irvine Family, one of the UK's largest cheese companies, with a turnover in excess of £150m per annum – now that’s a lot of cheese! Joe now works for a property investment company set up by the Irvines, based in Portugal, this involves Joe having to go to his “office” in Portugal regularly and he calls this work!

    • Joe was introduced to the Club by Robin King and welcomed by President David Anderson.


    19th April 2007 - New Member Induction: David Lindsay, David lives in Murthly with his wife Wendy and his young family, David was introduced to the membership by proposer, Andrew Ritchie. David was brought up in and around Perth, the son of a well known family of potato merchants now running his business from Inveralmond Industrial Estate. David also operates a new business 'David Lindsay Self-Storage' and says this is fast becoming the primary part of his operation.  

    • David was welcomed into the Club by President Bill Miller, the Objects of Rotary read by Vice President David Anderson.


    7th March 2007 - It was with extreme sadness that we that we received the news of the sudden death of Evelyn Young, the wife of our fellow Rotarian - Fergus Young. The Clubs heartfelt sympathy goes out to Fergus and his family. Evelyn died after a long illness, born with great courage and humility and will be sadly missed by all.

    • Members of the Club attended the Funeral Service at Kinnoull Parish Church


     8th January 2007 - Alison Milne received the latest picture of Grace Njoki, the little African orphan from Nairobi that our Club adopted in 2005. Grace, is now 4 and will be 5, on 5th August this year, look how she has grown, wonderful.

    • A smile to brighten up - even the worst winter's day! 


    4th January 2007 - It was with great sadness that we received the news that one of our regular Wednesday Club members for over 20 years, Mr Hans Wolter has passed away. Hans was a German prisoner-of-war who stayed on in Perth after the war.

    • President Bill, asked Bob McFarlane our Wednesday Club Convener, to pass on our condolences to his Son and family.


    28th December 2006 - New Member: Alan Howie Robertson Calderwood, Perth was introduced to the membership by proposer, Dr Ron Clark. Alan was brought up in Perth and has recently returned from a sojourn around England in various educational positions, including Middlesbourgh - Director of Education. His brother Iain Calderwood was a Past President of our club and his late father a member in the 1920's. Alan was President of both the Middlesbrough and Uxbridge clubs.

    • Alan was welcomed into the Club by President Bill Miller, the Objects of Rotary read by Vice President David Anderson.


    10th December 2006 - Perth Rotary Club were the International Toast of members at the Rotary Club of Madang - Papua New Guinea. They had 3 guests at the meeting, one from Scotland - Laura Carse, and from the USA - Mosses Bockerie and also from Taiwan - Dr Chan.

    • President Bill returned the compliment, and we toasted their Good Health!
